General information

Razor wire is a spiral made of reinforced barbed tape (RBT), which not only provides reliable protection but also effectively deters intruders by its appearance.

This product is also known as: CSB (concertina security barrier), concertina razor wire.

Features and structure of the CSB

RBT consists of wire and barbed tape rolled onto it, with stamped blade spikes.

The wire is high-carbon galvanized steel with a diameter of 2.5 mm.

The RBT blades have a patented trapezoidal shape. This blade shape increases the contact area with an intruder, creating more sharp points and making it harder to bypass the barrier.

Blade-spike length — 22 mm.

Thickness of the galvanized barbed tape — 0.5–0.55 mm.

Reinforcing wire has increased hardness and spring properties due to its high carbon content.

This means that:

  • it is harder to cut with a basic tool;
  • it pierces, cuts, and has catching properties;
  • when cut, it “springs back,” injuring the person who damages it;
  • it restores its cylindrical shape after deformation.

The concertina security barrier (CSB) is produced by winding reinforced barbed tape onto a metal cylinder of a specific diameter — a technological drum. This makes the spiral turns even, uniform in size, and of the required diameter.

After winding, the blank is removed from the drum, and the turns are connected in 3–7 places with mounting clips 10 mm wide and 1.1 mm thick.

The clip ends have a dovetail-style protrusion and recess. When compressed, the ends lock into each other. On a stretched CSB , such a clip is very difficult to open without cutting yourself.

These fasteners are sometimes called clips and are used to install CSB. They are used to attach the turns of the barbed barrier to the tension wire and to connect turns when moving from one coil to another.

When stretched, the clips prevent the spiral turns of the concertina razor wire. As a result, a cylindrical concertina security barrier.

The more clips there are, the more rigid the cylinder is and the rounder its shape becomes.

As the number of connections between the turns increases, the maximum possible distance between them in the stretched barrier decreases. This improves protective performance.

The diameter of the turns in the folded state is 450, 600, 900, or 1100 mm.

The diameter is selected depending on the fence height and the required protection level:

  • 450 mm — suitable for small fences on private plots and household areas;
  • 600 mm — the optimal choice for protecting enterprises, warehouses, and industrial facilities;
  • 900 and 1100 mm — used at strategically important or hard-to-access sites.

Razor wire coils in three diameters Packaged razor wire coil

After the turns are connected, coils are formed. Each coil contains 86 turns (for 1100 mm — 100 turns).

Each coil is packed in dense paper or polypropylene tape. The packaging helps prevent worker injuries when transporting barbed barriers.

Installation length of Kazachka CSB®

This information applies to any concertina barbed barrier.

Concertina security barrier provides good protective performance if the distance between its turns is within 33–40 cm.

When attempting to cross a barbed barrier with this distance between turns using decking or tarpaulin, razor wire bites into the intruder’s body from the sides. The larger the diameter of the razor wire, the more effective the side protection.

If you are willing to sacrifice the protective properties of the CSB by increasing the length of the barbed barrier, you should know the maximum stretching limits of different types of razor wire.

Coil diameter, mm Number of clips Recommended distance
between turns, cm
Maximum possible distance
between turns, cm
Recommended/maximum
stretching length, m
450 3 33 50 14/21.5
600 3 40 57 14/24.5
600 5 33 40 14/17.2
900 5 35 56 15/25.3
1100 7 40 50 20/25

To stretch a coil to the maximum possible length, a turn-spacing template must be used.

Example of stretching 450 mm razor wire Stretching 600 mm razor wire

When the distance between turns is increased, the wire deforms, installation becomes more difficult, and the protective properties of the barrier decrease.

The number of turns is calculated using this formula:

Number of turns = (perimeter length, m / distance between turns, m)*2

If the number of turns is divided by the number of turns in one coil, the result is the number of coils needed to protect the perimeter.

Number of coils = (perimeter length, m / distance between turns, m)*2 / number of turns in one coil

Concertina barbed barriers resemble an accordion. In English-speaking contexts, they are called “concertina” for this reason. A coil, like a concertina, can be stretched to different lengths. Therefore, to compare prices from different suppliers, divide the price of a coil by the number of turns in that coil for each supplier and compare the resulting values.

How to choose a concertina security barrier?

Before purchasing, ask yourself: how long do you want the product to last?

10–15 years?

In this case, it makes sense to buy the most affordable option, which will begin to corrode after about 5 years. In an aggressive environment, for example near the sea coast, close to ammonia sources, or in an acid-saturated atmosphere, rust may appear after only one year. After corrosion begins, the barrier will continue to gradually lose its protective properties for a long time and will become completely unusable after approximately 15 years.

25–30 years?

Do you want the barrier to retain its protective properties for longer? Then we recommend buy razor wire with enhanced corrosion protection. It is slightly more expensive, but it will begin to rust only after 20 years and will generally last 25–30 years.

If you plan to use the product in an aggressive environment, we recommend using Kazachka razor wire® with polymer coating. We carried out tests in the company’s laboratory conditions and found that it has the highest resistance to concentrated NaCl solution among all major types of razor wire currently offered on the market.

The most common razor wire installation scheme

  1. Attach the razor wire brackets to the fence using welding or wedge anchors. Brackets should be installed every 3–4 meters.
  2. Install the tension wire.
  3. Stretch the razor wire and attach it to the tension wire with mounting clips every meter.
  4. Attach the razor wire turns to the fence every 1.5–2 meters using concrete dowels and a metal plate.
  5. Paint the brackets with weather-resistant paint.

Kazachka razor wire packaging®

Most manufacturers, trying to reduce costs, supply razor wire without packaging.

Kazachka barbed barriers® do not have this drawback. Kazachka razor wire® is wrapped in paper and additionally bound with polypropylene tape, so it is safer to work with than competitors’ products.
