The price of a gabion depends on the method of manufacture and the material used. Classical gabions are made of twisted mesh, the price of welded gabions is slightly higher. Prices are subject to seasonal influence, as the cost of raw materials increases from February to May, then the price stays at the same level and at the end of summer the cost of raw materials begins to fall. The internal dynamics of prices can be disrupted by external factors when world prices for metal and energy costs change. Sometimes suppliers of raw materials artificially create panic, reporting that the cost will rise in price, so manufacturers get rid of stocks.

Production of box gabions
Gabions are manufactured in the factory according to GOST R 52132-2003 and ASTM A 975-97, from a double-twisted metal mesh with hexagonal cells (8x10 cm), divided into sections using diaphragms installed inside the gabions every meter along the length. Double torsion guarantees integrity, strength and even distribution of loads, prevents unwinding in case of web rupture. To reinforce the gabions, the edge wire (3.4; 3.9 mm) of the panels has a larger diameter than the main wire (2.7; 3.0 mm).
In the case when gabions are used in an aggressive environment, the wire for their manufacture undergoes a galvanizing process, and then is additionally covered with a PVC (polyvinyl chloride) sheath. The PVC coating protects the metal (diameter with PVC 3.7; 4.4 mm) and provides greater resistance to chemical, mechanical and corrosion damage. If the zinc coating is not resistant to salt and ammonia, then PVC serves as a barrier between the metal and the aggressive environment.
Some enterprises produce Gabions made from Rabitsa . The disadvantage of such gabions is that if one spiral is damaged, the entire Gabion becomes unusable, since the spiral unwinds when damaged, forming a large hole in the canvas.
Gabion structures belong to the class of flexible structures and perceive possible soil precipitation, reacting to this with slight deflections. The gabion is not destroyed and continues to perform its function. Similar processes occur during the time of consolidation and shrinkage of the soil. The main factor in resisting precipitation is the double torsion basket, which takes the main loads.
The porous structure of the gabion gives the structures excellent drainage properties. The high permeability of gabions eliminates the possibility of one of the main factors of structural instability - hydrostatic loads. The break in the connection between ground and surface waters is excluded (in the case of the construction of bank protection structures). And there is practically no removal of rock particles under the sole of such structures.
Many years of experience in the use of gabions allows us to classify these structures as permanent, not temporary. Gabion structures favorably affect the state of natural ecological balance in the area of their construction, due to which the structure is affected by loads that are lower than those for which they were originally designed. Therefore, the efficiency of gabion structures increases over the years.
Due to the fact that gabions accumulate soil particles, they contribute to the emergence of vegetation, they are a unique building material for the restoration and improvement of landscapes. In the case of bank protection, the number of fish increases in the area where gabions are installed, because gabions contribute to the development of flora and biota, which are necessary for the life of fish.
Lifespan of a gabion
The lifespan of gabions depends on the life of the metal, not the contents of the basket. The structure will collapse when the metal rusts and ceases to form an integral basket. Galvanized gabions are considered the most common, but in humid climates, PVC (polyvinyl chloride) coating is used, and rarely stainless steel. Gabions with PVC coating have a service life of about 60 years.
