Purpose and application
At the moment of a direct lightning strike into an object, a properly designed and constructed lightning protection device must take over the lightning current and divert it to the ground. The passage of the lightning current must occur without damage to the protected object and be safe for people both inside and outside this object.
Earthing switches should not be placed in riverbeds and reservoirs, as well as in drying soil, for example, near pipelines with hot water or steam. Artificial ground electrodes, through which a continuous current flow is expected, must be made of materials that are not subject to electrochemical corrosion. These earthing switches are installed vertically. If a single loop ground electrode does not provide the required active resistance or if the potential difference is unsafe for people who are close to the ground electrode, then additional loop ground electrodes should be used, located approximately three meters apart. The contours, as they move away from the object, should be laid deeper and deeper in the ground.
