Background information about wire rod

Wire rod is a type of long-rolled metal, which has the form of a metal bar of round cross-section, the diameter of which, as a rule, is from 5 to 9 mm.
Delivery of wire rod is carried out in coils in a single continuous piece weighing from 100-150 kg to 1 ton.
In the production of hot-rolled wire rod, carbon steel grades 0, St0M, St1KP (PS), St 3 KP (PS), as well as Sa08(A), Sv08G2S are used, which gives it strength, flexibility and durability.

Wire rod production (technology)

The production of wire rod, which you can buy from us, is carried out at the metallurgical plants of Ukraine in Makeevka and Krivoy Rog.
Wire rod is produced on combined mills of linear, continuous and semi-continuous types. The blanks are rolled along a long rolling mill through shafts by hot drawing. The metal (it is called "bloom") is heated while passing through the mill, and the shafts compress it from different sides, forming a round section of wire rod. At the end of the rolling mill, the hot wire rod is laid in rings using a special winding machine.

This is followed by a cooling process. The wire rod is cooled in two ways: natural air cooling (slower - as a result, the wire rod is more plastic and soft); accelerated cooling (using water or cooling fans - the surface of the wire rod is stronger and harder). After cooling, the finished wire rod is placed in coils.
Wire rod intended for the production of wire is also additionally cleaned of scale with a scale breaker (mechanical cleaning) or by pickling in acid (chemical cleaning method).
Its quality is subject to increased requirements. Particular attention is paid to ensure that the surface of the wire rod is perfectly flat without burrs, folds and any other defects, since their presence significantly reduces strength and consumer properties. During the production process, wire rod undergoes constant monitoring of the main parameters in accordance with GOST 2590 : maximum deviations in diameter (±0.5 mm), mass of one meter of length, cross-sectional area and others.

Types of wire rod

Depending on the cooling method, GOST 30136-95 distinguishes the following types of wire rod:

1. cooled naturally in air (designation VO);
2. subjected to one-stage accelerated cooling (designation UO1);
3. subjected to two-stage accelerated cooling (designation UO2).

When buying wire rod, pay attention to the fact that the cooling method must also be indicated in the quality documents.
Depending on the accuracy of rolling, GOST 2590 distinguishes between wire rod of ordinary accuracy (designation C) and wire rod of increased accuracy (designation B).
Wire rod, as a rule, is produced with a round section with a diameter of 5.0 to 9.0 mm .
